Could Monovision Free You From Glasses After Cataract Surgery?

One of the most common procedures we perform here at our offices in Chula Vista, La Mesa, and El Centro is cataract surgery. In this procedure, the eye's natural lens, which has become clouded over by the cataract, is replaced with an artificial lens (also known as an intraocular lens, or IOL).

Many people are hoping to become free of glasses or contacts after having this procedure. Although selecting a premium IOL (either multifocal or accommodating) is one way to reduce dependence on corrective lenses, there is also another option: monovision.

What Is Monovision?

With monovision, two different IOLs are placed in the two eyes. One of these is calibrated for distance vision, while the other is calibrated for near vision. This offers the patient an extended range of vision without needing to wear corrective lenses.

In most cases, the brain adapts to the different vision in the two eyes. The brain seamlessly switches between the input from the two eyes, giving the patient an experience of the world

Why Do Patients Choose Monovision?

The most common reason for patients to choose monovision over a premium IOL is the cost. Although cataract surgery is generally covered by insurance (including Medicare), the insurance typically only covers the cost of a monofocal IOL. The added cost of a premium IOL is generally not covered. For those on a tight budget, monovision allows the surgeon to use the more affordable monofocal IOLs, while still offering the chance for some degree of freedom from corrective lenses.

Although the majority of patients adapt quite well to monovision, there is a small number of people for whom monovision never quite feels natural. These patients can opt to have a revision surgery which changes out one of the lenses, so that both eyes are corrected for distance and reading glasses are used for closer vision.
